The Wild Bird Trust of BC is deeply disappointed in British Columbia’s decision to allow the removal of a rare Peregrine Falcon nest in Abbotsford.
World Wetlands Day is recognized on February 2, 2021 as a global celebration of wetland ecosystems, some of the most productive ecosystems of the world. The term “biological supermarkets” has been used to describe wetlands, given the immense biodiversity they support. Wetlands also provide several beneficial ecosystem services, including protecting and improving water quality, providing habitat for fish and wildlife, storing floodwaters, and maintaining surface water flow during dry periods.
Nest box programs at Maplewood Flats and Rocky Point (Port Moody) initiated in 1994 greatly contributed to the resurgence of Purple Martins in BC. Now, around 110 nest boxes are mounted every spring upon the return of the Purple Martins at Maplewood Flats. In 2019 it was estimated that there was nesting activity in around 86 nest boxes at the Maplewood Flats colony.
Increasing cases of sick and dying birds are emerging in record-high numbers across British Columbia and Oregon due to an ongoing widespread, lethal salmonella outbreak, as reported by the Wildlife Rescue Association.
