 The Coast Salish Demonstration Garden is a central component of our Repairing Ecological and Cultural Relations initiative at the Maplewood Flats Conservation Area in North Vancouver. Located within the traditional and unceded territory of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation (TWN), this transformative project seeks to restore native habitats and revitalize traditional Coast Salish cultural practices, while promoting public awareness and education about TWN’s immemorial stewardship of the Burrard Inlet.

Key components of the approximately 600 m² site include

  • Garden beds featuring native BC plants used for construction, dyes, fibers, and planter boxes for traditional food and medicinal plants;
  • Restoration of areas for cultural and ecological education, including accessible pathways and programming spaces;
  • An outdoor classroom and rain garden to manage stormwater runoff and replace invasive species with native vegetation; and
  • A harvest table and other features to support hands-on cultural workshops and community engagement.

Construction Information
Results from a site investigation determined the project will no adverse health effects for site visitors, and will have positive environmental effects upon completion by restoring and enhancing a former industrial site, incorporating native and culturally significant plants, and improving rainwater management through a rain garden.

Timeline
Construction will take place Spring/Summer 2026. Construction activities would take place during regular work hours (no work on Sundays).
