Catkins appear before, or with, first leaves in February, blooming in March. Seeds scattered by wind in April. Provides cover for many small species. Twigs and leaves loved by beavers, moose, and deer. Catkins produce nectar, attracting a wide range of pollinators. The inner bark used as medicine for aches, the stems for bow making, and the outer bark for fabric making, and tea.

Plant in moist, humid surroundings. Great for stabilising stream banks and moist slopes.
