Western red-cedar is known to Coast Salish people as the “tree of life.” Every part of the tree is gathered and used, including in ceremonies and is very sacred. Cones tend to mature in August; seeds are dispersed September to November, and are food for squirrels, pine siskins, juncos, redpolls, and more. Apply mulch around the root zone to retain moisture. When pruning, only trim current season’s growth and die-back. Performs best in a sheltered location.
