The only Indigenous oak in British Columbia.
Flowers provide pollen for bees in early spring. Acorns are eaten by mammals and birds. Oaks are host to a wide range of insects, especially caterpillars. These provide abundant food for breeding birds. Butterflies supported include Gray Hairstreak, Lorquin’s Admiral, Echo Blue, California Sister, and Propertius Duskywing.
Slow growing, with a beautiful gnarly branching form. Has a deep taproot & does not like being moved. Prefers deep, rich, well-drained soil. Great for dry rocky slopes or bluffs.
